KL Auschwitz was the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers. Over 1.1 million men, women and children – mostly Jews, but also Poles, Sinti and Roma, as well as Soviet POWs – lost their lives there. The Memorial today is, among other things, the Archive and Collections, as well as a research, education, conservation and publishing center. There is no way to understand postwar Europe – and the world – without an in-depth confrontation between our idea of humankind and the remains at Auschwitz.
